We meet no ordinary people in our lives

WELCOME TO YOUR

PORTCAST
HOME

But first …  we’re putting in place a new PORTCAST about the cost of electricity in Port Macquarie (and anywhere else).

It seems to some to have suddenly doubled for people who can’t afford it.

So we’re going to look at who are the biggest bastard companies, Are they thieves? and who’s hurting the most?

So let us know if you have some “good” facts about you or people who are struggling.

AND NOW:

PortCast.au is for you

It’s a podcast you and everyone can share and contribute to and enjoy this crazy-amazing-unusual-exceptional-friendly town.

And it’s a podcast you’ll feel you own.

See how you can be part of it

 WHAT’S THE

PORTCAST

STORY?

THE SHOCKING MISTAKE

The first thing you’ll instantly notice (as a PMQian)

is that
THIS MAN IS WEARING SHOES!
ON THE BEACH !

. . which is so clearly wrong and he is therefore a total foreigner from Sydney (or Brisbane).
But to be fair he fell in love with Port Macquarie on this very day in July, twelve years ago and he’s visited PMQ a lot since then. (These days he wears thongs – to the beach but not on the beach)

So this person found himself moving, at last, to Port Macquarie on 1 September 2021

He has family and acquaintances in Port Macquarie. He grew up in Tamworth and went to school and uni in Armidale. As a child he spent fabulous holidays among the sheep on a property near Walcha and rode horses there and “helped” with mustering. Plus he owns (or more accurately is owned by) a Kelpie, so .. he’s got fair dinkum “Rural and Regional” cred, yeah?

Except –

He spent decades in Sydney following his career as a TV producer and Executive Producer and then (more rewardingly) as a Vocational Trainer and Training Manager, and bringing up his children.

And now that his three boys have left home, he’s moved to Port Macquarie and he’s loving it (although he does miss his “kids”).

BUT!

Although he has family and friends here, he’s noted major changes in Port Macquarie in just those twelve years. For one thing it’s full of universities and young people. Which is excellent.

The other is that living here is very different from short (and enjoyable, obviously) visits to PMQ and he needs to find out just what and who PMQ is and how it works, what happens when the Xmas tourists have gone home, and how he can learn about the amazing people, the city, and its surrounding areas.

He needs to find a way to learn as much as he can and the answer is to talk to as many different people of all kinds and interests and skills and experiences as he can convince to have a chat about .. well, whatever comes up, and to share these insights with other people who would be interested in what’s going on in PMQ. Especially newbies but also everyone.

So what could that look like, he wondered.

Well, it could look like . . a Podcast.

So that’s what it is

But to do it he’d need some help and advice from friendly PMQ people about who he might talk to.

So that’s where you come in, if you feel like it.

And that means the real PortCast Story is just beginning

t

WHY DO THIS?

People are amazing and surprising and I want to get to know a lot of amazing people in this town. People are incredible, all of them, and when you shut-up and listen you always discover something fascinating.

I want to listen and learn about Port Macquarie, how it works and why it’s so crazy wonderful as it is.

HOW IT'S DONE

It’s done with two people, sitting comfortably with a cup of coffee, or a drink, or lunch, or going for a walk, or at someone’s place or where they work or frankly anywhere. Two people having a chat and one of them keeping their mouth shut as much as possible (hopefully that’s me).
Two people wearing unobtrusive RØDE lapel mikes connected to an iPhone. Later, editing, updating the website, uploading to the universe and it’s done for all the world to hear. It’s about as painless and fun for both of us as anything can be.

WHAT IS IT?

PORTCAST is a way of entertaining lots of people; and revealing to people who are new to Port Macquarie (or not) how it works and the magic that goes on and why. Actually, even people who’ve lived here for decades and for generations might rediscover their city in a new and surprising light

HOW TO BE PART OF IT

Suggest people you think are particularly interesting*, community influencers, leaders, doers, businesses, especially small and home-based businesses, activities, things that are changing the town, musicians, artists,  comedians, poets, educators, students, octogenarians, emergency responders, pilots, on and on and on.
And not just the obvious people. You can help by suggesting people who’ll surprise us all: the unsung heroes, the quiet achievers, the NOT ACTUALLY ORDINARY so-called “ordinary” people.

* It’s ok if that’s you!

Send us a message!!

WHY PORTCAST IS DIFFERENT

This is not a podcast to show off how clever an interviewer is or how much they know.

It’s a friendly, person to person conversation between two people over, maybe, a cup of coffee. They might start out strangers and end up friends (hopefully).

I mean, I hope I’m clever enough to shut up and listen, to let people relax, to be comfortable and confident enough to have fun sharing their journeys, insights, knowledge, interests, experiences. Or whatever, actually.

Also, if they like, interviewees are welcome to be incognito, nameless, unidentified, secret and anonymous. (Thank you Mr Roget.) Or of course they can let it all hang out. It’s their choice.

PortCast isn’t mostly focusing on the predictable suspects everyone already knows with an axe to grind. It’s mostly about the real people who make Port Macquarie the amazing community it is.

In any case it’s definitely not the typical three desperate donks in hoodies in their “mom’s” basement talking bull and fake-laughing at their own dumb “jokes”.

By the way, PORTCAST is free to everyone.

I don’t get paid. I absorb the costs
and that’s the way it should be.

On the other hand if now and then
you feel like saying “thank you”,
or encouraging me in some way, you could

“Buy me a coffee”

and that’s really easy!

Just click to buy me a coffee, or two, or . .

AMAZING THINGS PORTCAST
HAS DISCOVERED ABOUT
PORT MACQUARIE ALREADY

WHY YOU ALREADY LOVE IT
AND WHY IT MAKES YOU HUNGRY FOR MORE

1. Thongs are "de rigueur "

Thongs are de rigeur at the beach, in Coles, in fact everywhere in Port Macquarie, and if you don’t wear thongs you’re a wanker. And who knows when you might end up on the beach. After all, the town is more or less surrounded by water

2. Unless ..

. . unless you’re a contractor in which case you can wear steel-toed mongrel boots and fluorescent vests

3. Dogs are compulsory

Dogs are compulsory. You have at least one dog, preferably a Kelpie (the r&r icon), or other working dog, a Golden Retriever or Labrador, or a green-collared greyhound. Rescue dogs are highly regarded. You meet other dog-owners daily at Lighthouse Beach or Nobby’s

4. Eight out of 10

Eight out of 10 motor vehicles in Port Macquarie are 4WD and a man (or family) without a truck, a van, or a ute, is . . well, unusual?

5. Port Macquarie men

Port Macquarie men are decent, friendly and often understated. (This alone separates them from Sydney men). They don’t go anywhere without their cap. They have an excellent dry sense of humour. Young men are tall and buff and ride surfboards all day.
How they say hullo: “How’s it goin’ ” How they say goodbye: “Have a good one!”

6. Port Macquarie's wonder-women

Port Macquarie’s wonder-women are engaging, friendly, fun, socially skilled and confident, know how to listen and enjoy engaging in interesting conversations. They look you in the eye. Young women are tall and fit.
How they say hullo: “Hullo”, with a smile
How they say goodbye: “Enjoy your evening!”

7. Port Macquarie people

PMQians are more relaxed, less stressed and less unnecessarily competitive than people in the big smoke. Also, and importantly, they have a really good sense of humour. Especially the women.
Port Macquarie people are honest. We know this because we can leave our thongs at the beach for hours and no-one will ever steal them,
But the richest thing about PMQ is its strong sense of belonging and community. I’ve seen this in Tamworth and Armidale of course, and PMQ proves it’s true when the stakes are high. It’s a very warm feeling that you don’t find in capitol cities.

8. Port Macquarie drivers

Port Macquarie drivers wave “thank-you” if you let them in. This also now separates PMQ from Sydney
On the down side, though, standard procedure when turning is to wait until you are exactly at the turning point and only then to indicate your intention to turn left or right

9. Port Macquarie greetings

Port Macquarie people greet complete strangers, sometimes with “g’day” but usually “how’s it goin'”, or “how’re you going”, or with a wave. This is just standard practice for the PMQian, but for the fragile newbie it’s a very warm welcome

10. Port Macquarie is a forest

Port Macquarie is basically a sprawling tropical rain forest, surrounded by mountains, seas, rivers and streams everywhere, with houses dotted here and there that can’t see each other, and winding country roads throughout the suburbs, right up to the edge of the CBD. You wouldn’t be surprised if you suddenly met Robin Hood

11. Serious about grooming lawns

PMQians are serious about their lawns which they groom at least fortnightly. They have to because climate. Sydney can get away with monthly but in Port Macquarie the lawn starts to look shabby and unkempt the next day. That’s why there are more lawn-mowing businesses here than a riot of Kookaburras laughing at sunset.
The truth is it’s the ants that own the gardens and build their clay palaces all over the lawns and nature strips, as well as invading the homes

12. Port Macquarie Bin nights

Port Macquarie Bin nights are strange to southerners and westerners where it’s the Red Bin that goes out every week. So why is the green one the King Bin in PMQ? Because see above!  Also, the lawns and gardens here are much more expansive. So the green Bin needs putting out every week

13. Ho-Hum Dolphins and Whales

PMQians seem to take Dolphins and Whales in their stride. They seem common-place and everyday and ho-hum (although the locals were a bit surprised by the seal/sealion(?) that recently literally rolled up onto Lighthouse Beach). Of course the southerners don’t understand this at all. Down there almost nobody sees whales and the only dolphins they see are in a zoo. Here they can’t get out their cameras fast enough.
The thing is that up here there is so much and such diverse wildlife. Everywhere. All the time. It’s just natural. It’s real nature, like the brush turkeys who wander casually across busy roads as if they owned the place (they do) and were protected (they are)

14. And that's just the beginning!

There’s so much more still to discover!

WHY MORE IS MORE!

All this is just like the wrapping on a xmas present.

The real excitement is still to come: undoing the ribbon and tearing off the paper to find what’s in the box. There’s so much more to learn!
And that’s what PORTCAST is about! The next steps will be seriously exciting!
